Who We AreThe Des Moines Symphony is a full-service professional orchestra. The orchestra performs six pairs of classical concerts throughout the season, as well as an Opening Night Gala, a pops performance for New Year’s Eve and its annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert, a free performance on the State Capitol grounds on July 3rd. Established in 1937 as an adjunct of Drake University, the Des Moines Symphony separated completely from Drake University in 1969. In 1979, the Symphony found a home in the newly established Civic Center, and now performs all of its indoor full orchestra concerts there. In 1987, Maestro Joseph Giunta joined the Des Moines Symphony as Music Director and Conductor, and is now celebrating his 20th year of conducting the Des Moines Symphony.
