Jonathan Sturm has built his current reputation as a performer and teacher through concert appearances and master classes in over 25 states, and abroad in Albania, Cuba, and South Africa.  As concertmaster of the Des Moines Symphony for 15 years, and as an eight-year member of the internationally acclaimed Ames Piano Quartet, his concert schedule typically includes over 40 annual appearances.  He has performed as concerto soloist in the Midwest and on each coast, has given solo recitals throughout the United States, and has collaborated in chamber music with musicians such as the Cassatt Quartet, Itai Shapira, Bruce Brubaker, Mark Kosower, Masumi Per Rostad, and Darrett Adkins.  He has recorded for the Dorian, Albany, and Cesky labels, and his students have graduated to conservatories such as Oberlin, Eastman, and Indiana University.  His private studio is considered one of the elite studios in Iowa, with his students frequently winning competitions in the region and performing with orchestras in the Midwest.  With the Ames Piano Quartet, he has appeared on the nationally syndicated St. Paul Sunday radio show.  As a pedagogue, he has published articles in Strings, and The American String Teacher among others, and he frequently gives talks to students and professionals on topics ranging from "Easing Performance Anxiety," "Assessment in the Private Studio Lesson," "Financial Planning for Musicians," and "Career Development and Promotion for Young Musicians."

 

Jonathan Sturm has played the violin for thirty-seven years and the viola for fourteen years and frequently plays both on recital programs.  His musical education came from teachers including Josef Gingold, Sylvia Rosenberg, Gregory Fulkerson, Stephen Clapp, and Zvi Zeitlin.  His violin is by the Italian maker Pressenda from 1825, and his viola was made by Michael Darnton of Chicago in 1992.
