The mission of the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras is to provide young musicians of central Iowa an opportunity to expand their musical and social perspectives while performing challenging yet age–appropriate repertoire. Participation in the DMSYO builds upon the musical instruction students receive through their private lessons and school music programs. The Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras are comprised of four orchestras:
Participants receive a comprehensive music education as they progress through the sequence of the four orchestras. Ensemble participation builds upon a young musician's sense of responsibility and self–motivation and strengthens listening skills and practice habits. As a member of Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras, students learn to be both stronger leaders and reliable members of a collective group. Each orchestra rehearses on a weekly basis in preparation for a concert, which is the culmination of weeks/months of preparation for students and directors. Each orchestra performs 2–4 concerts per year. DMSYO Testimonial: I was a participant in Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra in my five years at the Academy. During middle and high school, playing in an orchestra outside of school improved my playing in my private lessons and at school. Now as a college student studying music, I am thankful for my experience at the Academy. The level of dedication to the music Maestro Giunta expects helped prepare me for my college studies. Emily Wieland, Academy Intern and Alum ‘07 Membership is granted by auditions held each fall. Click here for information on the auditions for the 2009-10 Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras
