Des Moines Symphony Academy 2009 Summer Programs Join the fun at the Des Moines Symphony Academy this summer! Musicians of all ages will gather to play together, improve skills, and build friendships. Students should expect to be challenged through new experiences with fellow players. Teachers will give participants encouragement and a fresh perspective. Previous enrollment in Academy programs is not required; students from all schools or teachers are welcome! Camps and classes will be held at the Temple for Performing Arts, 1011 Locust Street in Des Moines. Performances will take place in the Temple's Grand Hall or Recital Hall. Where grades are listed, enrollment based on the student's grade for the 2009-10 school year. If the minimum enrollment is not met, the Academy reserves the right to cancel the program. There are no fees above tuition amounts listed, although some instructors may recommend music for participants to purchase (music will remain property of the students). Introduction to Flute Choir Time: 7:00-8:00 pm Concert: Thursday, May 28, 8:00 pm
Instructor: Anne Stein Minimum: 4 students
Do you love the flute? Come join other flute lovers and play in a flute choir! This class will offer beginning flutists an opportunity to gain experience as an ensemble player which enhances individual development in young flutists. Students will learn how to use different tonal colors and listen for blend, balance, and intonation as well as developing their technique in fingering, articulation, breathing, and embouchure. The focus is on fun and creativity while playing different styles of music, including traditional rounds, classical, and jazzy pieces. The class will prepare students to play in the upper level Des Moines Symphony Academy Flute Choirs.
Chamber Music Workshop Time: 5:00-6:00 pm Concert: Monday, July 13, 6:00 pm
Instructors: Sophia Ahmad, John Helmich, Charles Miranda, Ray Songayllo Minimum: 6 students
String players and pianists: audition to play in small groups with new friends! After auditions, students receive thoughtful placement in string quartets, mixed trios, and piano duos. Repertoire will be mailed in advance. Each group will be coached by an instructor, one hour weekly for six weeks. Groups will explore chamber repertoire while building special performing partnerships. Instruments: violin, viola, cello, piano. Auditions: Monday, May 11, 5:00-7:00 pm. Perform a piece you know well. Existing groups also welcome, please audition together!
Flute Choir Workshop Time: 7:00-8:30 pm Concert: Thursday, July 9, 8:00 pm
Instructor: Anne Stein Minimum: 4 students
Join in the summer fun! Savor your "flute flavor" with other flute enthusiasts. We will explore music from classically sublime opera themes to playfully jazzy contemporary pieces arranged especially for "flutes only". Participants will have the opportunity to play alto and bass flutes. Instrumentation will include piccolo, string bass, bassoon, and percussion. Performances will include a final concert and casual performances in summer settings. New members may be required to audition. Required material: "Flute Sessions" by Livingston Gearhart (Shawnee Press), available from local music stores or online.
Harp Ensemble
Age: 10 to Adult (minimum 1 year playing experience) Time: 4:00-6:00 pm Concert: Thursday, June 18, 6:00 pm
Instructor: Mary Foss Minimum: 3 students
Beginning, intermediate and advanced harpists are welcome! This course is a great way to learn ensemble techniques, listening skills, phrasing and tuning using intervals. Students will rehearse ensemble repertoire, which will be mailed prior to the first class. Styles covered include classical, Celtic, and jazz. Players will perform solo repertoire for critique. Composition Workshop
Age: 12 to 18 Time: 3:30-5:00 pm
Instructor: Ray Songayllo Minimum: 3 students
A beginning composition course with emphasis on basic 20th and 21st century musical techniques. Create your own musical ideas on manuscript paper! Areas covered will be: pentatonic, modes, and whole tone scales; tone clusters, pattern techniques, musical forms, and irregular meters. Required: ability to read treble and bass clefs, note values and rests, knowledge of Major and minor scales, intervals and triads. Students will use the piano keyboard in class, but only minimal piano skills are needed. Please bring: spiral manuscript book, pencils, and erasers. (No concert)
Fiddle Camp Time: 3:30-5:30 pm Concert: Thursday, July 16, 5:00 pm
Instructors: Amanda Langston & Jenny Graham Zimmerman Minimum: 4 students
Calling all violinists who like to fiddle around! Students will explore American and Irish fiddle tunes, with parts for beginners through advanced players. Students must be able to read music and play independently. Performance on the last day will showcase the group and soloists with local bluegrass band Ortonville Circus.
Brass Quintet Workshop
Age: 7th-12th grades Time: 4:00-5:00 pm Concert: Thursday, August 13, 5:00 pm
Instructor: Christian Baughman Minimum: 5 students
Explore brass quintet literature with fellow students. A quintet will consist of two trumpets, one French horn, one trombone or euphonium, and one tuba. Playing chamber music develops skills such as technique, listening, and communicating. Plus it's fun! Work on those lip slurs and get ready for a great experience - Canadian Brass style.
Piano Camp Time: 4:00-6:00 pm Concert: Friday, July 31, 5:30 pm
Instructor: Sophia Ahmad Minimum: 4 students
Music and fun with fellow pianists! Activities include music games, improvisation, music theory, solo study and performances. Group and individual experiences develop listening and evaluation skills. Students will collaborate to play pieces as a group and study music history as well. Players will perform solos and ensembles on Friday to conclude the camp.
Group Piano Classes
Age: 3 & up
Instructor: Sophia Ahmad Learn to play the piano in a nurturing and creative environment! In addition to piano skills, students are introduced to basic musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, and melody. Classes include Music for Little Mozarts (ages 3-6), Music for Moppets (ages 4-6), Kinderkeyboard (1st-2nd grades), and Music 1A (3rd grade and up). Two sessions are scheduled, each is three weeks long. Sign up for one or both and give your child a taste of music this summer. Class times vary; call Joshua at 515-280-3332 for the schedule.
Private Lessons
Age: 3 to adult Summer is a great time to make progress on your instrument! Don't take a break, improve your playing to get ready for next year's auditions and solos. Experienced professional musicians teach students of all ages and abilities, from three years of age (depending on the instrument) through adulthood. Private lessons are offered on variety of instruments: violin, viola, cello, harp, piano, flute, bassoon, trumpet, percussion, and voice.
