As part of the 16th annual Yankee Doodle Pops, the Des Moines Symphony and its partners, Bank of the West, Dahl's Foods, KCCI, Iowa Banker's Association Banks, and the Office of the First Lady, Mari Culver, held the second annual Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger- A Symphony of Caring and collected 3,574 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Iowa. Food was collected from June 21 - July 4 at area Bank of the West, Dahl's Foods, and other participating Iowa Bankers Association locations. Food was also donated at Yankee Doodle Pops by the estimated crowd at over 100,000. Among the donations, Bank of the West also presented a $10,000 check to assist the Food Bank. With the generosity of those in attendance, Yankee Doodle Pops equated approximately 24,068 pounds of food to be donated to the Food Bank of Iowa.
The Food Bank of Iowa is a private, non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste. The Food Bank solicits, warehouses, and distributes donated grocery products through a network of 285 non-profit food providing organizations in 42 Iowa counties. The Food Bank keeps all food donations local, meaning the 1 in 7 children living in hunger as well as the 14.4% starving households in Iowa will receive the donated items from Yankee Doodle Pops Drive Against Hunger.
The Des Moines Symphony has set the date for Yankee Doodle Pops 2011. This FREE, outdoor concert at the Iowa State Capitol West Terrace is set for Friday, July 1, 2011. Maestro Joseph Giunta and the orchestra will once again take the stage at 8:30 p.m. to bring you one of Iowa's largest and favorite Independence Day kick-offs. The concert culminates with an amazing patriotic fanfare complete with the area's premier fireworks display. |
