The Des Moines Symphony Academy’s group lessons for young beginners provide aspiring musicians with the knowledge and skills for a lifelong appreciation of music.

The Des Moines Symphony Academy’s Beginning Strings Program provides young musicians aged 4 and up with their first instructional experience on violin, viola or cello.

The Des Moines Symphony Academy’s group piano classes teach music fundamentals through discovery-based activities in a nurturing, exploratory environment for students aged 3-7.

Group Lessons

    Group Piano Program Age: 3 - 7 Location: Temple for the Performing Arts Tuition: $175 per session

    The Des Moines Symphony Academy’s group piano classes provide students aged 3-7 years old with the knowledge and skills for a lifelong appreciation of music. During each of our weekly 45-minute classes, your child will learn music fundamentals through discovery-based activities in a nurturing, exploratory environment. Fundamentals include reading musical notation, singing and moving to music, ensemble playing, improvisation, ear training, conducting and a relaxed piano technique.

    Classes are offered in four semesters yearly — Fall, Winter and Spring. Students may join at the start of any semester. Each 9-week semester consists of weekly 45-minute classes with shorter 3 or 4-week sessions in December, June and July.

    Our class schedule accommodates young musicians enrolled in either morning or afternoon pre-school programs.

    The Des Moines Symphony Academy’s Beginning Strings Program provides young, aspiring musicians with their first instructional experience on violin, viola or cello. Beginning Strings classes are offered for musicians as young as 4 years of age.

    Classes are offered in four semesters yearly—Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Students may join at the start of any semester. Each 9-week semester consists of weekly 45-minute classes culminating in a large group class taking place during the tenth week, which will provide students with ensemble experience early on in the learning process. 

    The Symphony Academy’s Beginning Strings Program is designed for students to begin instruction at age four or five and continue until they are prepared to begin private lessons at the Symphony Academy and participate in the Symphony Academy Youth Orchestras program. Through participation in the Beginning Strings Program, students will gain all of the skills necessary to move forward with productive weekly private lessons and to be fully participatory members of the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras.
